"The Boondocks" returned last night, and Aaron McGruder's animated social satire put its sights squarely on the 2008 election of Barack Obama and the incredible "Obama-mania" that swept the country. Unlike other shows which may have covered the election or mentioned Obama in passing, last night's episode took a few shots at the African-American community for blindly supporting a presidential candidate that many had never heard of before.
The episode, titled “It’s a Black President, Huey Freeman,” followed a German filmmaker documenting the 2008 Presidential Election. Attempting to discover just why blacks supported then-Senator Obama in such large numbers, the filmmaker eventually settled on the Freeman Family and their neighbors, getting their priceless thoughts on Obama, his policies, and of course his blackness.
"The Boondocks" attempted to put up a mirror against the black community's fierce loyalty for Obama, but wondered if his supporters truly knew of his policies or simply supported him due to his race. McGruder also skewered the likes of Will.I.Am and rappers such as Young Jeezy, Jay-Z, and Ludacris for writing pro-Obama lyrics when politics was rarely a topic ever placed in their music.
"The Boondocks" is always good for creating conversation and instigating debate, and episode one certainly accomplished that.
